2008 Scholarship Award Winners

La Plaza de Los Leones Proudly Presents A
2008 Academic Scholarship To:
Ashley Nicole Archuleta
Ashley Archuleta feels fortunate to have grown up in Walsenburg. She sees Walsenburg as a community that respects its heritage and its history.
Ashley prides herself in having had the opportunity to "give back to her community" while a student at John Mall High School. She has had a strong interest in working with children and during her senior year, Ashley started an internship at HeadStart, working with three, four, and five year olds. This experience has helped her to decide on a direction she wants to take: working with children, not as a teacher, but as a nurse to be able to care for them while they are sick.
Wherever she goes, Ashley says, she will be proud to say that she comes from a community that is open, caring, and accepting of everyone.
Please join La Plaza de Los Leones in congratulating Ashley as a recipient of the Plaza de Los Leones Academic Scholarship and in wishing her success in her post-high school education.
Tim Encinias
Tim Encinias' family has lived in Walsenburg for at least four generations and he is proud to be a part of that chain. He has grown to be a proud, intelligent, confident Hispanic male, comfortable with the community that has helped raise him. Tim wishes that the entire world could be "as happily mixed as we seem to be" in Walsenburg. Most people in Walsenburg, Tim says, have known each other and each other's families for along time and everyone seems to look after one another and "that's a comfortable way to live."
Tim's first career goal is to get a Bachelor's Degree in business. He plans on becoming an intern sometime during his college years in order to gain hands-on experience to add to his resume. He anticipates a position where he will be working with computer technology while pursuing a Masters Degree.
Tim plans on attending the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs. Tim has no illusions - he knows the road ahead may be difficult financially, but he also knows that there is no substitute for hard work and determination.
Please join La Plaza de Los Leones in congratulating Tim on being a recipient of the Plaza de Los Leones Academic Scholarship and in wishing him success in his endeavors.
Cami Rae Reynolds
Cami Rae Reynolds will be attending college to pursue a career in medicine. She loves to help people and has great people skills. Helping people has been a focal part of her life and she feels fortunate that she comes from a family that has instilled those values in her.
While at John Mall High School, Cami has participated in extra-curricular activities while maintaining high grades. She has been part of the volleyball and basketball teams during the school year and has participated in volleyball and softball outside of school. She has been an active member of Future Business Leaders of America, El Pomar Youth and Community Service, Student Council, PRIDE/SADD, and participated in the Knowledge Bowl. In addition, Cami headed up the school's recycling program.
Cami says that even though she hails froma small community with few organized activities for youth, there are still many things to be involved with, either in school or in community functions. She sees that students who are more involved tend to take more pride in their work and themselves, maintain good grades, stay out of trouble, and prepare for college.
Please join La Plaza de Los Leones in congratulating Cami as a recipient of an academic scholarship and in wishing her success in her future endeavors.
Jessica Dianne Robbe
As a student in La Veta High School, Jessica Robbe has received achievement awards in Geography, Spanish I, World History, Art, and American History and has been on the Superintendent's Honor Roll throughout her high school career. She is a member of the National Honor Society, and if that isn't enough, Jessica participated in food drives, helped clean up the local baseball field, and raised money for Hurrican Katrina victims in her spare time.
Jessica's plans include attending Colorado State University - Pueblo to pursue a degree in nutrition to become a nutritionist. Her reason for choosing this path is that she has a deep desire to help people and feels that one way to do so would be to help people eat properly and exercise in order to impact the obesity epidemic in this country. She would enjoy spreading knowledge on diet and nutrition wherever she is needed.
Jessica has strong values centering around her character, abilities and motivation that will help her to achieve her goals and dreams. She believes that the Hispanic culture and heritage in Huerfano County have had a strong impact on her life and how she views the world and that the diversity of this County has prepared her to see and meet the world outside of Huerfano County.
Please join La Plaza de Los Leones on congratulating Jessica s a recipient of an academic scholarship and in wishing her success in all her future endeavors.
